Arquitetura e Paisagem em Diálogo. Reconversão de uma carpintaria para unidade hoteleira

Abstract

It's in the relationship between architecture and landscape that this dissertation is built. With this work we seek to understand a challenging and complex context like that of the island of Madeira with the (re)design of a proposal for the reconversion of carpentry into a hotel unit, located on the Caldeira site in the municipality of Câmara de Lobos. This theoretical-practical work that we propose to develop here, is based on the analysis of the past and present of the island, sketching a study of the experience of the population, present in its History and in its geographical context. At the same time, we focus on the study of past architecture in accordance with examples of contemporary constructions that guide us on a solid basis of design and project experimentation. Through the idea of place, we reflect on the importance of (re)knowing and analyzing territorial requirements, where the relationship between the architect and the site should be established in a close and cohesive bond. In this sense, we understand that the present pre- -existence - a family carpentry - becomes an aggregate of layers of time, where multiple in situ characteristics, such as pre-existing rock excavations, enhance the understanding of new programmatic contents. Thus, in this real context, the experimental approach that we propose here, incites the interpretation of personal memory in accordance with the most diverse references of project stimulation, in a tension between the built and the superb landscape of this island territory.
