Puxar Fios, Coser Ideias. Têxtil como Ferramenta de Análise, Pensamento e Representação Arquitetónica

Abstract

In the nineteenth century, Gottfried Semper develops the Principle of Dressing (Prinzip der Bekleidung), where he proposes a reformulation of the origins of architecture, pointing to textiles as its direct predecessors. Currently, although the discourse is still mainly focused on the integration of textiles in architectural projects, the use of textile knowledge appears as a tool for spatial analysis and representation in the work and production of Fernando P. Ferreira, who explores weaving as a communicative and site-specific practice in his doctoral thesis. The multiplicity of contexts with which architecture is confronted, can also be translated into a multiplicity of methods used to interpret, think, and represent them. It is important to think of these tools for architectural analysis, thinking and representation as dependent on the context which is being studied, as well as reflecting of the individual practice of their creator. Trough a practice-based research, two practical experiments will be carried out where, by analysing two case studies, techniques such as sewing, quilting, patchwork and natural dyeing will be tested as a way of studying and thinking space. These experiments will be anchored by a conceptual, thematic, historical and cultural analysis of the disciplinary transfers between textiles and architecture. By exploring the links between textile and architectural practices, this study aims to contribute to the development of a transdisciplinary discourse, exploring ways in which textile can be integrated as a tool for analysis, thinking and representation in architecture.
