Abstract

This study explores the evolution of post-apartheid architecture in South Africa, with a focus on Khayelitsha, a prominent township in Cape Town. The research delves into architectural initiatives that challenge the rigid spatial divisions imposed during apartheid, promoting inclusivity, accessibility, and community engagement. It examines how urban design and spatial planning have been reimagined to foster social integration and address the legacy of segregation. Through case studies of the history, residential, public, and mixed-use developments, the dissertation highlights the transformative role of architecture in creating spaces that reflect the diverse identities and aspirations of Khayelitsha's residents. The findings underscore the potential of architectural interventions to contribute to social cohesion and urban resilience in post-apartheid South Africa.
