Abstract

: The purpose of this article is to examine the Latin monastic library of São Miguel de Refojos and assess the scope of its Latin book inventory, its specialization, and organization. We will conclude that it not only reflects the typical library of a male Benedictine monastery (as the library for women was quite different), but it is also a post-Trent library of theological speciality, in a broad sense, along with auxiliary disciplines such as Philosophy, Canon Law, Ecclesiastical History and Classical Literature, containing abundant didactic material; it is also a rich, balanced, post-Trent library, offering a composite view of Hispanic and Romanesque traditions, yet with an extensive Latin bibliography from the German geographical area. It undoubtedly meets the aspirations of its users in terms of education, reading, interests, and their needs for study and personal development. Following this, we will briefly examine the apothecary's Latin library, which is more specialized and housed separately, where Latin books make up more than 50% of the known collection
