Estudo Retrospetivo da Arquitetura e Urbanologia no século XXI

Abstract

This Dissertation consists of a study of the field of Urbanology, tracing a path of evolution of urban elements at an international and national level, as centers of phenomena of human activity (where organizational mechanisms reach their peak) and the way in which these phenomena are framed in the academic sphere. Some concrete sociological phenomena that characterizes the 20th and 21st centuries will be analyzed with greater focus. Also the paradigm of globalization, will be studied closely. Special focus will be placed on the case study of the city of Porto, which has undergone transformations in its morphology over the last century and a half. Local and national urban policies that marked the development of the city of Porto will be revisited, and comparative studies will be carried out with the academic reality of this scientific area in the study of this field. This Research will be structured into three moments: Modern, Post-Modern, and Contemporary. Each part will include a preamble based on one author who will frame each corresponding period. A selection of relevant case studies will be analyzed to illustrate the reality of urban transformation that Portugal has seen over the last century and a half, and the birth of its cities in contemporary context. A survey will be made of the Urban Plans presented in Porto during the corresponding period, and finally, each chapter will conclude by crossing this data with the evolution of the Syllabus of the Porto School in the same period, in order to understand the evolution of Urbanism in its project and academic spheres. Finally, a retrospective conclusion is drawn on urbanism in Portugal, privileging a concrete and informed understanding of our context in the city of Porto in the 21st century, and its globalized condition, as well as the contribution of the academic sphere to the thought about the city in the Portuguese rhizome.
