The many ways of doing philosophy of architecture (and what they tell us about contemporary philosophy and the place of aesthetics in it)

Abstract

In this article I first consider why there are such different ways of doing philosophy of architecture, resorting to philosophical sources as diverse as Heidegger and cognitive theory (Heidegger 2008, Pallasmäa 1996, Arbib 2021). I discuss what this shows about contemporary philosophy and the place of aesthetics in it (Miguens 2022, Cavell 1969, 1979, 2005), ending with comments on a film of architects at the drafting table (and not just there), doing their work of conceiving, sketching and designing (Borges de Araújo and Amorim 2023).
