| Abstract: | With this dissertation, we do not intend to carry out an extensive and lengthy study of the complete work of Gonçalo M. Tavares: because time and experience do not allow it, and also due to the fact that this is an Architecture dissertation. Thought and literary writing are strongly connected, so with this dissertation we intend to analyze the spatial and architectural dimension presented by the portuguese writer Gonçalo M. Tavares and specifically in his work The Devil. In this sense, literature presents itself as a tool to think about the body and space by inviting each reader to develop the imagery contained in fiction, building ambiences and atmospheres that break with the preconceived idea of space as a setting for the characters, stories and narratives that make up the literary pieces. Beyond strictly geometric, functional and formalist issues... architectural space is an integral part of the imagination and world views - it is, in its fullness, The Poetics of Space, as Gaston Bachelard wrote. With Architectural Thought in the Work of José Saramago by José Joaquín Parra Bañón as our encyclopaedic resource, we will understand literature as a tool for thinking about space through words and their repercussions on the body. In a reality where the relationship between architecture and literature doesn't seem to exist, we invoked this Portuguese writer to break this paradigm. We went in search of this "non-place", with the desire to break down the boundary between the two universes, creating a shared place where both words and drawings allow us to think about space together: Bañón and Gonçalo M. Tavares do not allow us to forget the power of the word, reinforcing that the word is also a material with which new realities can be built. The Devil, the most recent book by this portuguese author, expresses the idea of total possibility, with no rules other than those that literature and its author wanted to put into practice. We will manifest this Devil by using drawing as a gradual construction of thought, the result of freeing the imagination and free of rules, theories and pre-established notions, which tend to be offered by the practice of architecture. A natural and involuntary chronology that will accompany all the writing processes of this dissertation: an infinity of answers, where error is a virtue. We don't intend to make this dissertation a single, absolute truth; rather, we intend to leave each reader a space of their own - a space where each one can take on the responsibility of architect, reader and/or observer of the space they (and if they) decide to 'inhabit'. |
