A Quinta do Pinhão. A (Re) Construção de um Lugar

Abstract

The present dissertation, presented as the last project in the academical context, seeks to understand the identity of the place and the relation between architecture and landscape, though a practical approach, by designing a construction project strategy. Bounded by these subjects and having in mind that this paper is born from a real physical circumstance, it aims to document the study and intervention process on a property, in order to be able to answer the solicited program. Accordingly, it intends to reflect about the way to (re)construct on a site, through the execution of a project suited to local needs. This means that the theoretical research about the various concepts of place, landscape, nature, and event, will continue throughout the whole process and will be key to substantiate the project's decisions. The goal is to present a project rehearsal at Quinta do Pinhão, where both place and landscape are the main characters. The property is about seven hectares long and it is located in parish of Pedroso e Seixezelo, in Vila Nova de Gaia. It belonged to the Dias Ribeiro family for over a hundred years, but since the departure of its last heir and to this day, the property is uninhabited and in ruins. The choice of Quinta do Pinhão was based on its natural and patrimonial characteristics; and it reflects, aside from a personal interest, an academical interest, due to the relation established between construction and nature. The objective is to contribute to the structuring and development of the territory, knowing that there is a responsibility to act on a building's history. Therefore, the reconversion of the property in a space of collective usufruct that will serve as an event farm is proposed. In order to question the several themes already pointed out, taking a theoretical-practical approach, the goral of this dissertation is to answer the needs of a new program, the circumstances of the place and the already existing structures.
