| Abstract: | The motivation and intention to continue training can change at different stages of a swimmer's career, including during a competitive season. Based on the principles of self-determination theory and planned behavior theory, this study aimed to compare the motivation and intention of Portuguese swimmers from different age groups throughout a competitive season. A total of 154 swimmers registered in the Portuguese Swimming Federation in the youth (n = 49, 11.7±0.8 years), juvenile (n = 42, 13.7±0.7 years), junior (n = 33, 15.4±0.8 years), and senior (n = 30, 19.5±2 years) categories responded via a questionnaire about their motivation and intention to continue training in swimming at three points in time (November, March, and June) during the 2023-2024 season. The motivation was assessed using the Portuguese version of the Behavioral Regulation Sport Questionnaire and the intention was based on three specific items. It was found that in the children's category, there was a decrease in the less self-determined forms of motivation, while the more self-determined forms of motivation remained at the same level. Conversely, in the juvenile and senior categories, there was an increase in less self-determined forms of motivation and a decrease in more self-determined forms of motivation. Only among the juniors, both self-determined forms of motivation increased. The intergroup comparison showed differences in amotivation, with seniors (M=3,21) revealing a higher average than youth (M=2,07). In the introjected regulation, a difference was observed in the interaction between time (M1 and M3) and the group, with the juniors presenting higher values than the youth group (M1 = 2,04; M3 = 3,06). All groups differed in intrinsic motivation, with the youth group showing higher values at all three moments (M1 = 6,60; M2 = 6,53; M3 = 6,13). There was a decrease in the intention to continue participating among youth, juvenile, and junior groups, while an increase in this variable was observed among seniors. It is concluded that motivation and the intention to continue in swim training vary between age groups over the competitive season. |
