| Abstract: | This dissertation focuses on the study of the design trajectory of a Portuguese architecture studio, MIMA Housing, one of the first architecture studios in Portugal focused on prefabricated and modular timber housing projects. At a certain point, this trajectory diverged from that construction method. The aim is to reflect on the circumstances behind this shift, while still addressing themes directly related to it - measurement, prefabrication, and modular timber construction. The evolution of the concept of measurement/module in architecture throughout history, from the first civilizations to modern times, is crucial for understanding how it has influenced architectural production. This is particularly evident in the modular grid created by MIMA Housing, present in all its projects and inspired by the tatami mats of traditional Japanese houses. The grid and module are the foundation of modular construction, determining the entire structure as well as the spatial and functional organization of spaces. Beginning with a historical approach to prefabrication and modular timber construction, this dissertation seeks to understand their origins, concepts, and relevance in contemporary times. The principle of the prefabricated house resurfaces cyclically, albeit in different forms. Similarly, it aims to explore the fortunes and challenges of mass-produced housing, marked by an evident duality between architectural aspirations and commercial outcomes. Given the environmental impact of the construction sector and the current housing crisis, timber prefabrication is taking a new direction, driven by technological advancements and the emergence of new timber products such as glued laminated timber (Glulam) and cross-laminated timber (CLT). Finally, the dissertation aims to create a space for reflection on the circumstances that led a studio like MIMA Housing to move away from its initial construction approach, despite the continuing relevance of such methods in today's context. |
| Description: | A presente dissertação foca-se no estudo do percurso projetual de um atelier português, MIMA Housing, um dos primeiros ateliers de arquitetura focado em projetos de habitação pré-fabricada e modular em madeira em Portugal. Com um percurso a dado momento divergente deste modo de construir, tenta-se refletir as circunstâncias desse afastamento, mas sem se deixar de efetuar incursões por temas que lhes estão diretamente associados - medida, pré-fabricação e construção modular em madeira. A evolução do conceito de medida/módulo na arquitetura ao longo da história, desde as primeiras civilizações até à modernidade, torna-se importante para se compreender como a mesma influenciou a produção arquitetónica, nomeadamente a grelha modular criada pelo atelier MIMA Housing presente em todas as suas obras, inspirada nos tatamis da casa vernacular japonesa. A grelha e o módulo são a base da construção modular, sendo responsáveis por determinar toda a estrutura e a organização tanto espacial quanto funcional dos espaços. Partindo de uma abordagem histórica pela pré-fabricação e construção modular em madeira, pretende-se compreender a sua origem, os seus conceitos e a sua validade nos tempos atuais. Ciclicamente, o princípio da casa pré-fabricada renasce, ainda que em termos diferentes. Tenta-se, de igual modo, compreender as venturas e desventuras da casa em série, marcada por uma dualidade evidente entre os esforços arquitetónicos e as realizações comerciais. Considerando o impacto ambiental do setor da construção e da crise da habitação que estamos a vivenciar, a pré-fabricação em madeira está a tomar um novo rumo potenciado pela evolução tecnológica e pelo aparecimento de novos produtos de madeira como a madeira lamelada colada (MLC) e a madeira lamelada cruzada (CLT). Por fim, pretende-se promover um espaço de reflexão sobre as circunstâncias que levam um atelier como a MIMA Housing a ter-se afastado do seu modo inicial de construir, dada a pertinência da sua aplicação nos tempos atuais. |
