Antigo Sanatório de Paredes de Coura: Projeto de Reabilitação

Abstract

The following dissertation constitutes a project proposal for the now decommissioned and vacant Presidente Carmona Sanatorium in Paredes de Coura. It reflects on a program that allows for its reactivation and a design that, in line with the transformations it has undergone, maintains the legibility of the premises of the existing building. Throughout its history, the building has undergone multiple alterations in response to clinical issues that have arisen over the years. After an analysis of the municipality, potential future needs that the building might address are identified. The proposal thus seeks to address these needs through a set of interventions that can be phased over time. The structure of the dissertation is organized into three sections that mark different periods of the sanatorium: a recognition of the history of the complex, situating it within the global sanatorial context from an architectural and medical perspective; an analysis of the current condition of the building as well as the territorial context in which it is located; the development of the proposal, identifying programs and opportunities that the building can accommodate. The project seeks to integrate and result from the combination of these three sections. It is an attempt at a coherent evolution of the building. The proposed program also aims to reflect on how different generations have inhabited and can inhabit the sanatorium in the future; an idealization of the future, continuously supported by history and simultaneously addressing current issues.
