| Abstract: | The present dissertation aims to explore the complex dynamics that lead to the erasure of women's presence and memory in the field of architecture by evoking the legacy of the architect and designer Aino Marsio-Aalto and analyzing her unique experience. Studying the life and work of this Finnish architect allows for a parallel to be drawn with the broader experience of women architects throughout their professionalization process. The dissertation is structured into three chapters. The first chapter presents a historical and demographic overview of Finland, the European and Finnish architectural landscape of the time, and the status of women in society and in the architectural profession during the 20th century, establishing the foundation for understanding the context in which Aino lived and worked. The second chapter introduces the architect by constructing a narrative of her origins, family background, academic journey, early career, and contributions to female academic and professional associations. Lastly, the partnership with architect Alvar Aalto, with whom she was married and maintained a unique personal and professional collaboration, is discussed, highlighting the notable works that resulted from the combination of their ideas. In the epilogue, considering the complex issue of authorship, a reflection on Aino's legacy is developed, along with the events following her premature death, which may have contributed to the gradual erasure of her memory. This dissertation proposes not only to explore Aino's professional career, but also the complex social, cultural, and gender dynamics that influenced her trajectory and contributed to her invisibility. The original contribution lies in the detailed and contextualized analysis of Aino Marsio- Aalto's work, offering new perspectives on her importance and impact, challenging traditional narratives that marginalize female contributions. This dissertation is dedicated not only to honoring the role of this pioneering architect but also, to encouraging reflection on gender equality in the profession and history of architecture. |
| Description: | A presente dissertação pretende, através da evocação do legado da arquiteta e designer Aino Marsio-Aalto e da análise da sua particular experiência, explorar as complexas dinâmicas que conduzem a um apagamento da presença e memória das mulheres no campo da arquitetura. Estudar a vida e obra desta arquiteta finlandesa, permite traçar um paralelismo com a experiência genérica das mulheres arquitetas ao longo do seu processo de profissionalização. A dissertação está estruturada em três capítulos. No primeiro, é apresentado um enquadramento histórico e demográfico da Finlândia, do panorama arquitetónico europeu e finlandês da época, e do status da mulher na sociedade e na profissão de arquitetura durante o séc. XX, estabelecendo a base para a compreensão do contexto em que Aino viveu e trabalhou. No segundo capítulo, é feita uma introdução à arquiteta, através da construção da narrativa das suas origens, contexto familiar, académico, início de carreira e contributo no associativismo feminino académico e profissional. Por último, é abordada a parceria com o arquiteto Alvar Aalto, com quem foi casada e manteve uma colaboração pessoal e profissional única, dando origem a obras notáveis, fruto da combinação das ideias de ambos. No epílogo, considerando a complexa questão que envolve o tema da autoria, desenvolve-se uma reflexão sobre o seu legado e os acontecimentos após a sua prematura morte, que poderão ter contribuído para o gradual apagamento da sua memória. Propõe-se não apenas explorar a carreira profissional de Aino, mas também as complexas dinâmicas sociais, culturais e de género que influenciaram a sua trajetória e contribuíram para a sua invisibilidade. A contribuição original reside na análise detalhada e contextualizada da obra de Aino Marsio- Aalto, oferecendo novas perspetivas sobre a sua importância e impacto, desafiando narrativas tradicionais que marginalizam a contribuição feminina. Esta dissertação dedica-se não apenas a homenagear o papel desta arquiteta pioneira, mas também a incentivar uma reflexão sobre a igualdade de género na profissão e história da arquitetura. |
