Como se Narciso amasse Eco...: a imagologia segundo Marcello Duarte Mathias

Abstract

The work of Marcello Duarte Mathias - and in particular his most recent book, O Português visto por (alguns) Portugueses (2013) - can be read in the light of Imagology, a branch of Comparative Studies that studies, in a canonical definition, the process of representation of a national community by another community, or the vision of a national community by an author from another community. This definition has been progressively challenged by a redefinition of the processes of representation of nonnational communities and by an increased attention to the I-Other(s) binomial. In this sense Imagology requires an interdisciplinar reflection (on History, Geography, Rhetoric, Psychology or Aesthetics), but also a redefinition of (para)literary genres (diaries or memoirs). The work of Marcello Duarte Mathias is a good exercice of these various questions.
