Abstract

The number of independent publishers in Portugal is visibly growing. Publishers such as DAFNE, Circo de Ideias, A+A Books, Note and Monade were created expressly by architects in the first two decades of the 21st century. The architectural book, thought of as a means of communication, production and architectural manifestation, is the central theme of this dissertation. The aim is to explore the intersections and establish relationships between the various disciplines - communication, editorial design and architecture - that compete in the production of an architectural book. This research proposes the analysis of the architectural book through a parallel exercise of interpreting a building, understanding the intersections between the editorial and design processes, and deciphering the relationships between their practices. Based on a data collection that includes the consultation, cataloguing and categorization of books published by independent publishers in Portugal, the aim is to understand the relevance of the book in the context of the discipline of architecture and the reasons behind the founding of these publishers. Thus, considering the first two decades of the 21st century, this research aims to be a contribution to the construction of the history of books and independent publishers in Portugal, placing them within a national and international framework.
