A evolução da habitação plurifamiliar ao longo do século XX: Perspetivas a partir da Rua de 5 de Outubro

Abstract

This dissertation intends do give continuity to previous studies on Porto´s housing, focusing on the type of edification that became current and emerged in the first decades of the 20th century: the multiple-family housing. Rua de 5 de Outubro was selected as the study object, assuming that its urban evolution and its buildings are not an exception in the city but rather representative of a process of urban consolidation similar to that that occurred in various streets over the 20th century. This investigation is divided in two parts: the first deals with the consolidation of the street and its historical and urban setting, as well as the presentation of the different types of its buildings. The second part consists of the categorization and analysis of the multifamiliar dwellings builtd until the year 2000. The analysis carried out allowed for the understanding of the long-term processes of experimentation and consolidation that occurred in the street, in the scope of the multi-familiar. This way it was verified that, in the replacement of allotments, it was observed a process of continuity with previous models, as well as the emergence of new ones, in accordance with the change in ways of living, regulatory impositions and real estate logics.
