A Casa e a Criança. Estudo crítico com base na obra de Marcel Breuer

Abstract

Housing is one of the most important places in a child's life and the local that promotes their growth and education process. The relationship between the child and architecture is established to the extent that the design of space is an instrument that allows the creation of spaces in which children can play, learn, explore and dream. In the post-war period, a group of thoughts and reflections were developed about the human way of life and principally about the role of children in society, which was increasingly valued. A new lifestyle, known as The Good Life, was installed in American society, and commercialized through new media to the world, exposing a new domestic modernity. The growing concern for the education and training of children led to an increase in parental care in raising their children, which was reflected in a careful look at the child's life at home. Therefore, the creation of spaces for children in homes is a theme that has gained great prominence during this period and has simulated the development of new housing ideas with changes to the housing program. These children's spaces were designed to provide children with more independence, freedom, and autonomy. So, this master's thesis intends to understand how housing architecture can respond to the needs of children during their growth, through the study of architect Marcel Breuer and four chosen works by the author: the Geller House I, the Breuer House II, the House in the Museum Garden, and the Hooper House II. The analysis of these case studies allowed us to understand the design of children's spaces in the housing project, particularly the playroom space and the relationship with the remaining interior and exterior space.
