| Title: | Panorama Histórico do Uso de Aditivos Naturais na Construção Vernácula Brasileira |
| Issue Date: | 2024-08 |
| Abstract: | Vernacular architecture can be defined as a local or regional constructive culture in which materials and resources are used from the environment in which the building is located. In other words, we can understand that it is conditioned by and adapts to the social, cultural, geographical, climatic and economic factors of the territory, and therefore encompasses an innumerable plurality of typologies, construction techniques and materials used. Based on the assumption that it is intrinsic to the colonization process to impose and reproduce the knowledge and experiences of the colonizer on the colonized territory, the vernacular architecture reproduced in Brazil during the colonial period is the result of the configuration of the architectural pattern developed in Portugal based on constructive knowledge and materials already known by the colonizer. Based on historical studies and consultation of technical literature from the past and relevant literature, this study recovers this knowledge about the different natural additives used, focusing on coniferous lime, whale dregs and linseed oil, understanding the different contexts in which they were used in Portugal and in Brazil, identifying the relationship between them, with the aim of understanding the origins and reasons for the use of certain additives in Brazilian vernacular constructions. |
