Issue Date: 2024
Abstract: The Uruguayan Generation of 45 studied rigorously the preceding national letters from which they barely rescued some national authors. Using a term coined by Rodríguez Monegal (1956), it can be affirmed that they willingly assumed the condition of "parricides" while looking for inspiration from North American and European literary sources and facing literary creation from an intellectual, reflexive and analytical position that was not very prone to sentimentality. Despite the acidity of their criticism of the national literary past, they recovered and studied organically and in a generally respectful way the work of the writers of the Generation of 900 (Herrera y Reissig, Rodó, Reyles, Agustini, Vaz Ferreira) of whose prestige and continental resonance they felt they were indebted and inheritors. Based on this intellectual affinity, which is documented, this article presents the results of an investigation through which we have tried to trace the influence of the poets of the Generation of 900 (M.ª Eugenia Vaz Ferreira and Delmira Agustini) in the construction of literary identity and the work of the poets of the Generation of 45 (Amanda Berenguer, Ida Vitale e Idea Vilariño). In this search we have given special emphasis to the bridges that were built between the founding poets and their successors about spirituality and its several forms of expression. For this, in addition to their respective collections of poems, we have consulted interviews, diaries, letters, conferences and critical texts of their authorship.
