| Abstract: | Material lives from light. You are light, the mountains are light, the trees are light, athmosphere is light. All materials are light. Louis Khan In architecture, wherever there is light, there is stenopeic phenomenon. This dissertation presents research that aims to deepen the knowledge on the role of light in architecture. Light has always raised questions that extend from its origins and nature till its effects in architecture. From the start, we learn that architecture does not exist without light, so we can say that light is a material that is required for the development of Architecture. It is, without doubts, an element that allows us to enjoy the characteristics of the architectural spaces and, most possibly, the means that offers the greatest social and spiritual value to the space, because it generates emotions and intensifies the poetic impact of a project and building. However, light does not exclusively belong to architecture, first of all it belongs to humanity for it creates life, well-being, ambiences, sensations and is the origin off endless phenomena. Stenopeic, one of those phenomena, that is as old as light itself and origins images, both steady and in motion ones, has place in architecture whenever the sun raises and produces images that, on their turn, produce architecture. The main focus of research is the light effects that stenopeic phenomena may produce in architecture, as a means of representation and how the forms of space are conceived or perceived, as well as the relations that the human being establishes with them. So, our study follows mainly two ways, one of them is architectural design - studying the processes of configuration and design of space through the effects of light, and the other, is the light itself and its relevance through the observation of effects regarding well-being and dwelling. The research includes studies about light and its interconnection in the history of architecture - how architects worked it - and experimental studies through a construction of what we called Laboratory Cube, dedicated to deeper observations of light relation and architecture by changes of light sources and shapes of incidence in spaces that allow us to give significative impact to the function of lightning, that include the stenopeic vision and apparatus, having in sight to serve architecture, both in design and built space. |
| Description: | O material vive da luz. Tu és a luz, as montanhas são luz, as árvores são luz, a atmosfera é luz. Todos os materiais são luz. Louis Khan Na arquitectura, onde há luz, há estenopeia. A presente dissertação constitui uma investigação que tem o propósito de aprofundar o conhecimento da utilização da luz na arquitectura. Desde sempre que a luz fomentou temas desde a sua origem e natureza até à ponderação dos seus efeitos na arquitectura. Ao aprendermos que sem a luz não existe arquitectura podemos dizer que a luz é uma matéria necessária para o desenvolvimento da Arquitectura. E é, sem dúvida, um elemento que nos possibilita apreciar as características dos espaços arquitectónicos, e possivelmente o meio com maior valor no ambiente social e espiritual do espaço, pois gera comoções e intensifica o impacto poético dum projecto. Mas ela não é do domínio exclusivo da arquitectura, mas sim, e primeiro que tudo, pertence à humanidade porque produz vida, bem-estar, ambientes, sensações, e origina a manifestação de fenómenos. E a estenopeia, um fenómeno tão antigo como a própria luz, e que provoca o aparecimento de imagens, sejam elas fixas ou que estejam em movimento, está presente na arquitectura, pois, se a luz nasce do sol, a imagem, que provém do fenómeno estenopeico, nasce da luz, e esta, por sua vez, gera a arquitectura. O foco de interesse da investigação é o efeito que a luz e o fenómeno estenopeico, por ela provocado, têm na arquitectura como meio de representação e sobre a forma como as construções são concebidas, percepcionadas e na relação que o ser humano estabelece com as mesmas. É neste âmbito que o estudo se desenvolve, em dois aspectos, sendo um o da luz na concepção arquitectónica, com o estudar dos processos da formação e modelação do espaço através de resultados ocasionados pela luz, e o outro, a luz na representação da sua importância através da observação dos efeitos dos resultados nas construções dos espaços, ao nível da saúde e bem-estar no habitar. O trabalho é composto por estudos sobre a luz e sua interligação na história da arquitectura e como arquitectos a trabalharam, e por trabalhos experimentais através da construção de um Cubo Laboratório, dedicado ao aprofundar da relação da luz com a arquitectura, através da mudança de fontes e formas de incidência nos espaços de modo, não só, a darem uma importância significativa à função da luz na arquitectura, como também permitir a observação do fenómeno estenopeico, tendo em conta a intenção de este servir a arquitectura contemporânea, quer no projecto quer como utilidade no espaço construído. |
