| Title: | Leitores de Tertuliano na Península Ibérica nos séculos XVI-XVII. A crítica às vaidades femininas à luz da literatura moral e da literatura hagiográfica |

| Abstract: | The Aristotelian doctrine on the inferiority, both physiologically, intellectually, spiritually and morally, of women would know a large fortune, as shown by several texts, which spread a negative image of the female figure as a being with a propensity for sin. Vanity, as a taste for luxury, clothes, decorations, hairstyles and cosmetics is one of the negative aspects associated with women, in contrast to widely praised virtues, such as modesty. One of the fiercest criticisms is made by Tertullian, in the work De cultu feminarum. With this subject as a background, this article seeks to study the reception of this work written by Tertullian in moral literature and hagiographic literature, in the Iberian Peninsula, in the 16th and 17th centuries, highlighting how the condemnation of female vanities is configured as a fundamental condition in the sense of the construction of a devout behavioral model. |
| Description: | A doutrina aristotélica sobre a inferioridade fisiológica, intelectual, espiritual e moral da mulher conheceria uma larga fortuna, declinada em vários textos, que difundiram uma imagem da figura feminina como um ser com propensão para o pecado. A vaidade, traduzida no gosto pelo luxo, pelas galas, pelos enfeites, pelos penteados e cosméticos é um dos aspetos negativos associados à mulher, contrapondo-se a virtudes largamente elogiadas, como o recato, a modéstia. Algumas das críticas mais acérrimas foram tecidas por Tertuliano, no tratado De CultuFeminarum de Tertuliano. Tendo como pano de fundo esta problemática, este artigo procura auscultar a receção desta obra escrita por Tertuliano na literatura moral e hagiográfica, na Península Ibérica, nos séculos XVI e XVII, realçando como a condenação das vaidades femininas se configura como um tópico fundamental no sentido da construção de um modelo comportamental de matriz devota. |
