Abstract

This dissertation addresses the importance of integrating environmental and social sciences into architectural practice and training. It examines how these fields contribute to sustainability and human well-being in architecture. The study involves a historical analysis, the evolution of the environmental and social fields at university and the impact they can have on an architect's training and practice. The aim is to promote a more conscious and meaningful architecture through an education that encompasses these two themes. The three chapters of this dissertation deal with the following themes: 1.A chronological analysis of the contributions of environmental and social sciences, highlighting relevant authors, works, concepts and events. 2. the integration and development of this knowledge at the University of Porto, focusing on the periods of implementation, development and consolidation of the themes. Emphasis is placed on the role of notable figures such as Carlos Ramos, Marques da Silva and Jacinto Rodrigues, as well as the influence of professors from disciplines related to the two areas of environment and sociology, present in the 21st century. 3. an analysis of the themes relevant to master's students based on their dissertation theses, as well as a reflection on the author's personal experience. This chapter serves as an introduction to the final reflection on the role of environmental and social sciences in the training of architects and the future of sustainable architecture. This dissertation offers a comprehensive view of the connections between architecture and the environmental and social spheres, as well as shaping a more responsible and meaningful architecture for the future through their integration.
