Ilha de Moçambique, um olhar pela cidade esquecida de "Macuti"

Abstract

The Island of Mozambique incorporates two contiguous cities but with relative formal autonomy: the city of Pedra e Cal, inherited from the Portuguese, and the city of Macuti (the coconut palm leaf) where most of the population now lives. On an island where architecture was greatly influenced by the Portuguese, the interest in how it coexists with traditional and local architecture is intriguing. The dominance of Portuguese architecture was such that there was a segregation of the town of Macuti from the town of Pedra e Cal. Although the latter imposed physical limits to the existence of Macuti's houses, the codependence did not cease to exist. Thus, this research aims to reflect on how informality, the way of living and appropriation are presented in the city of Macuti and how these cultural characteristics impact urbanism and the way of living the house. This dissertation seeks to explain the differences between the two cities and to make an approach to the house of Macuti, looking at the city of the same name, as the central object of study. Starting from the scale of the city, passing through the neighborhood and entering the house itself.
