A Produção Moderna em Esposende

Abstract

Speaking of Viana de Lima would be incomplete without mentioning Esposende in addition to the Architecture. With permanent imprints implanted in the sites of intervention, his work, a representative of the Modern Movement, demonstrates the movement's significance during this time. This connection is defined by the 20th century, and the socio-political setting of that era is decisive for the architectural history. Alongside this time, the city of Esposende is established. A community on the North Coast that relies on agriculture and fishing for a subsistence living and experiences the economic success it has long desired during the summer. In order to meet this demand, the potential for its urban growth illustrates a direct connection between the landscape value of the area and the resulting architectural output. In a time marked by territorial planning, care for the context and functionalism were merged, and natural valences permitted suitable interventions that valued the environment. In Esposende, particularly, the Modern Movement is applied, and artistic freedom supports the contribution that this era embodies. The Portuguese reality will offer harmony between contemporary rigour and vernacular subtlety, in an appropriate connection to its setting, along with the review of the last phase of the CIAM. This is because it has achieved the requisite political distance in the area of architecture. To put it briefly, the art of construction emerges, and is demonstrated in this instance by the summer house built in distinctive places, such as the pine forest, dune, river, and sea, which created the urban framework to intervene and value. The work's motto is provided by the urbanisation in the Suave Mar dunes, which are located in the area north of the Cávado River's mouth. Thus, the Modern production in Esposende is deepened.
