Entre-espaço: arquitetura, imagem e experiência

Abstract

Transitional spaces are covered in different creative disciplines. They represent, in architecture, spaces between spaces. They are present both in the private sphere and in the public or collective sphere, and are capable of connecting, creating gradients of negotiation between spaces separated in first order by functionality, comfort, supervision, or ambiance, the latter generated by a set of sensory characteristics that attribute an atmosphere to that space. They are charged with dynamism, in the case of passages, or stability, in the case of liminal and monumental spaces. They function in very different ways based on local culture, and often contribute to the expression of a regional identity. Without transitional spaces, architectural spaces are incomplete. Spatial continuity and the interaction between public and private, people and environment, open and closed, inside and outside, are established through specific in-between spaces. They play a key role in the delineation and gradual change of functions, and are able to promote a more authentic and deeper bond with the built environment, as well as contribute to architectural cohesion within cities. But how do the dynamics work in these spaces? In what ways can they influence the journey, and which elements are capable of determining ambiances? The main objective of this study is to understand, with the aid of photography, the nature and importance of these transitional spaces, and to investigate their functioning and influences on people, as well as their power to define atmospheres and negotiate realities. By investigating these typologies of transitional spaces and analyzing their formal elements, spatial characteristics and the perceptions they generate, this dissertation seeks to identify how these spaces and the representation, through photography, can influence the user experience. Through theoretical research and photographic documentation, this work aims to establish a comprehensive understanding of these spaces, reinterpreting their importance and potential as key elements in contemporary architecture and urban living.
