Tectónica e Expressão do Espaço Doméstico - uma reflexão com base nos projetos do Arquiteto Sérgio Fernandez

Abstract

Architecture is an intermediate in the relationship between Man and Earth, or said in other words, it supports life. It translates our presence in the world. Therefore housing has particular interest to be studied. Within the subject of housing, this dissertation aims to focus especially on the issue of tectonic expressiveness and how buildings are erected. It is observed frequently in contemporary architecture and specially in the domestic field the importance given to the facade and his covering and shape. The internet, global platform for information, is assumed as indisputable tool of this process. The paraphernalia of methods of presentation (pictures, drawings, charts) follows countless spectacular and imposing architectural solutions exposed. This scenario where the structure seems engulfed in a kind of sterile consumerism, eager to be positive approven by the blue rectangle that says I like this - needs to be thought. Yes, architecture should be consumed. But in loco, as a lived and experienced space. Should meet the fourth dimension mentioned by Távora and Gideon. Only this allows the perception of architecture, a four dimensional art. Thus, it seems appropriate to think on aesthetic and functional issues that underlie the architectural practice. In the construction of domestic space, tectonics seeks place between the act of construcion and composition, decorum (ornament influenced by technics). To adress these issues we will take into account the history of housing, victim of a accelerated development in the nineteenth century. In Portugal, the work of Sergio Fernandez appears naturally because of their explicit architectural quality and by his academic and theoretical contribution. As it will be exposed by this work, his practice helps to better understand and think about composition and tectonic expression. More than a monograph on the author but at the same time with his housing projects as a starting point, this dissertation intend to share a recognized methodology, pragmatic and responsive to reality, in order to serve society key objective of the architectural discipline. Foreseeing architectural practice, thechnology seems to have a great contribution. However, as Mies and Aalto remember, it seems appropriate to balance equally all factors involved, supported by new or ancient methods tested throughout history, in order not to influence unilaterally and immediately the art of building.
