| Abstract: | Today we find ourselves in an era greatly undefined. A increasingly fragmented society, a global economy in the brink of rupture, with new-born dynamics which, more and more, appear generic in a culture of consumption. Architecture reaches the present time with, among others, the task of discovering its own identity and consequently its role, before itself and before society. Dating back to the birth of humanity as something essential for the construction of this very society and for the cultural, technical e economic evolution, Architecture maintains a subject-like character, with agents legitimated to practice, which, at the same time that seeks the virtue within the quality of the codes acknowledged as valid among professionals (therefore becoming more hermetic and displaced to the laymen), it is forced to be economically competitive, without ever letting itself be mistaken for generic construction enacted by other agents. This cultural capital is then a differentiating element of architecture and its nature is both ideological and personal. Each architect is an author that epitomizes his world through his work. The artistic and subjective streak of this practice is subsequently source of possible abuses and omissions.Thus, architecture, as a self-regulated and self-assessed discipline, must not be heedless to ethical issues involved in the edifice of society in the global and economistic world of today. Hence, the aim of this work is to understand how both ethics and politics interact with architecture, what consequences are there for the practice and what changes may affect architecture and its identity. With that in mind, the focus will be cast on themes which envelop the dimensions that this thesis wants to address, while trying to figure how these can be assimilated by the contemporary architectural reality. We will start with the historic framework and some contextualization of the concepts, to let know how these are used throughout the essay, followed by the addressing of the themes, which seem more relevant to the objectives this dissertation proposes to achieve: What meaning do the concepts of ethics and politics convey for architecture? in what way may these help us discover the identity of the discipline? how can one be more ethical or more political? and finally, how to endure the conflict that seems to envelop these notions? |
| Description: | Hoje, encontramo-nos numa era de imensa indefinição. A sociedade cada vez mais fragmentada, uma economia global em ruptura, com novas dinâmicas culturais que apresentam cada vez mais aspectos genéricos de uma cultura de consumo. A arquitectura chega aqui com, entre outras tarefas, a de descobrir a sua identidade e, consequentemente o seu papel, perante ela mesma e perante a sociedade. Remontando aos primórdios da humanidade, como algo essencial para a construção da sociedade e para a sua evolução cultural, técnica e económica, a arquitectura retém um carácter de disciplina com agentes legitimados para a praticar, que ao mesmo tempo que procura virtude na qualidade dos códigos admitidos como válidos entre os profissionais (o que a torna mais hermética e deslocada do leigo) é forçada a ser economicamente competitiva, sem nunca se deixar confundir com a construção genérica feita por outros agentes. Este capital cultural é, assim, elemento diferenciador da arquitectura e é de carácter ideológico e pessoal. Cada arquitecto é um autor que representa o seu mundo com o seu trabalho. A vertente artística e subjectiva da disciplina é subsequentemente fonte de possíveis abusos e omissões, pelo que a arquitectura, enquanto disciplina auto-regulada e avaliada, não deverá ser alheia às questões éticas envolvidas na construção da sociedade no mundo global e economicista de hoje. O âmbito deste trabalho será então compreender como ética e política interagem com a arquitectura, que consequências têm para a sua prática e que mudanças poderão trazer à Arquitectura e para a sua identidade. Para tal focar-se-ão alguns temas que conjugam estas duas dimensões que o trabalho se propõe abordar, tentando perceber como se coadunam com a realidade arquitectónica de hoje. Partir-se-á de uma resenha histórica e alguma contextualização dos conceitos abordados, para se dar a compreender o uso dos mesmos durante o trabalho, sendo seguido da abordagem dos temas que se consideram mais prementes para a chegar aos objectivos a que este trabalho se propõe. O que poderão significar os conceitos de ética e política para a arquitectura? Em que medida é que estes nos podem a ajudar a descobrir a identidade da disciplina? Como ser mais ético, ou mais político? E como enfrentar o conflito que parece englobar estes dois conceitos? |
