A Pousada do Palácio do Freixo

Abstract

This dissertation is intended to reflect and generate debate on the issues of intervention in historical buildings and landmarks. It analyses attitudes towards the architectural heritage inherited and identifies processes of intervention within. Intervention in a pre-existing building e!ectively involves knowing and interpreting its history. It is necessary to respect their identity, while adapting to a new use and answering to requirements of comfort and safety. Despite the individuality of each pre-existing intervention, it is necessary to know the theoretical principles formulated over time in order to understand and support the best options for the project. Through consultation and collation of literature an analysis of the historical evolution of theories on intervention in heritage was made: defining concepts related to the theme, identifying relevant theoretical positions, referring documents of conservation and restoration, and understanding the prospect of conservation and re-use of buildings in Portugal. Pousadas de Portugal have played an important role in the rehabilitation of historical buildings in our country. We have made a reflection on the evolution of the path of Pousadas de Portugal, since its origin to the present, comparing di!erent positions and methods of action, realizing the contribution of conversion for heritage. For an in-depth study of the issues relating to conversion of monuments we have made an analysis of the Pousada do Palácio do Freixo in Oporto. In addition to addressing the adaptation of the Palace to Pousada, we have also made a review of its history, its shape and all transformation throughout times.
