Identidade da Imagem na Arquitetura de Herzog & De Meuron

Abstract

Our reflection was based upon the image identity problematic, because we think it is, today, one of the issues that most concerns a certain intellectual vanguard, that remains focused to the essential problems of human existence. Indeed we debate ,nowadays, with a double problematic: if on one hand everything is virtual, and here we navigate, on the other hand, and for a balance necessity, we want to maintain a "down to earth" attitude. This descrepancy, or this ontological qualm, happens due to an avalanche that communication nowadays bring us, and that several times, transformes itself in an unbearable sound. More than ever before, we need to be selective , and in terms of architecture, we realise that also here, the image identity problematic sets because of this lack of stability, for there is no apodictic truths, everything is changing and moving. We live in a world in wich image prevales, its worth a thousand words. Herzog & de Meuron, appeared to us as a work hipothesys due to the conceptual treatment that they developed around the architecture image identity problematic . We call them sober illusionists, because through the use of the phenomenology and the perceptual moments that these tools brings them, they transformed the image, not in mere representation or ornament, but provided it with a fully original meaning, making it an architectural material nonmaterial, and here is the essence of its originality. On the other hand the image identity no longer is one, but follows a multiplicity of meanings, conferred on it, in a final analysis by the observer. It's an identity in constant construction, its an open theorization, "where the path is made walking."
