Abstract

This thesis aims to study the Erik Gunnar Asplund works, Swedish architect. The study is focuses on three major project of the architect: Stockholm City Library, Göteborg Law Courts and Woodland Crematorium. According to Kenneth Frampton, "Asplund having been influenced in the Klara School by Östberg and Ivar Tengbom. He tried throughout sporadically in his career, transcending the"battle of styles", merging the vernacular and classical in a primitive form of expression and authentic ". 1 This work attempts to demonstrate, at the time when all the architects was influenced by the National Romanticism, how there are architects reacted against industrialization and against the Gothic revival, but they defended the search for a new Nordic ideal, we can find in the Asplunds work his inspiration: "(...) the affirmation of architectures continuity over the time, based on a revolutionary new covenant with the ancients, namely, the extraordinary idea of permanent coherence and alliance with the ancient world. "
