Abstract

This study aims to understand the methods of Urban Planning after a Catastrophe, by exploring the different strategies dealing with the emergency necessities of this scenario and the reconstruction process thereafter. At a time confronted by multiple disasters, many places are destroyed and their inhabitants faced with the need to decide where to settle and what to do to survive and subsist. What methodology should be applied in urban reconstruction after a catastrophe? In what way can one merge the measures needed to be taken urgently with those aiming for long term development? What's the importance of the particular place affected in defining those measures? Keeping in mind the time spans before and after the catastrophe, this study moves through the planning of the city and the way it evolves, the organization of urban settlements and the use of technologic models. These are also present when approaching different examples and specific concepts, allowing the understanding of a few particular subjects necessary in defining reconstruction strategies.
