| Abstract: | The aim of this work is to study the contribution of Urbanism/Architecture concerning social segregation in the city of Rio de Janeiro. In that way, several parts of the city, where you can feel segregation, were studied and the big question is in how urbanism and architecture are a factor in the fragmentation that features the Brazilian urban fabric. As a bottom line, the urban evolution of Rio de Janeiro is studied in order to understand the nowadays situation and the two different realities of urban development that coexist: the formal and the informal city. To understand this uneven development, are considered the numerous components of the urban space that contributed for the segregation: the imbalance of mobility and supply network access, the classes' division that you can see in the residential distribution and the inequity in the distribution and treatment of public spaces and equipments. The case studies are Baixa do Sapateiro and Barra da Tijuca, since are examples that symbolize both extremes in social segregation; one is the result of willingly caused segregation and the other is consequence of the social disparity and urban discrimination. With this thesis I intend to demonstrate that in the social segregation problem, urbanism and architecture and essentially connected and nowadays this correlation is an urgent need to face social problems that haunt the actual wonderful city. |
| Description: | Este trabalho pretende estudar o contributo do Urbanismo/Arquitectura no fenómeno de segregação social presente na cidade do Rio de Janeiro. Nesse sentido, analisam-se várias partes da cidade onde a segregação se expressa, e questiona-se de que forma o urbanismo e a arquitectura contribuem para a fragmentação, que hoje marca o tecido da urbe brasileira Estuda-se a evolução urbana do Rio de Janeiro como ponto de partida para entender a situação actual e as duas diferentes realidades de desenvolvimento urbano que coexistem: a cidade formal e a cidade informal. Para compreender este desenvolvimento desequilibrado consideram-se as várias componentes do espaço urbano que contribuíram para a segregação: a desigualdade de acesso às redes de acessibilidades e de abastecimento, a divisão de classes, que se expressa na distribuição residencial, e a desigualdade na distribuição e tratamento de espaços públicos e equipamentos. Os casos de estudo usados são a Baixa do Sapateiro e a Barra da Tijuca, por serem exemplos que manifestam dois extremos da segregação social; um é o resultado de uma segregação provocada voluntariamente e o outro é originado pela desigualdade social e pela descriminação urbana. Com esta dissertação pretende-se demonstrar que no problema da segregação social, o urbanismo e a arquitectura estão intrinsecamente ligados e que, hoje, entender esta ligação é uma necessidade urgente para enfrentar os problemas sociais que assolam a actual cidade maravilhosa. |
