| Abstract: | In recent years, the historical centre of Oporto has experienced a significant population reduction. This reduction is the result of the changing economic climate coupled with the cultural shifts of the 21st century. The old housing models have proven to be impractical for modern living. Additionally, these models do not meet new contemporary comfort requirements and have led to the overall degradation of downtown housing. Despite these changes, the preservation of the historical downtown Oporto is a global and social concern therefore careful consideration must be given to new projects moving forward. Thus, urban rehabilitation should work to preserve the historical center while adapting to changing public needs and values. Oporto has an historical centre characterized by an important and valuable architectural style, with its buildings set in a coherent and unifying language. The problem with this type of architecture is that the current structures of the old city are no longer able to support contemporary problems of accessibility. Infrastructure problems associated with new development of the downtown include narrow streets preventing the construction of parking areas, and batch width limitations inhibiting housing to commensurate with needs of the modern family. On the other hand the new social habits or a rhythm of life increasingly accelerated, are aspects that create also, new housing requirements. In this sense is born the willingness and motivation to investigate the burgeois portuense 19th century house, as housing to become current and dynamic of urban development. This thesis aims to focus on three topics of contemporary housing adaptation: Vertical Circulations, Parking and service Areas. Considered issues of high importance and that cause some constraints on the transformation of the old portuense buildings. We will use the cases of rehabilitation of the 19th century house, as a way to typify the kind of interventions that are being done. The purpose of this study is to synthesize a database of information in a comprehensive way so that prudent solutions can be easily determined and poor planning can be avoided. We have to scrutinize past designs and look at our current methods of analysis critically to ensure smart planning in new development projects. |
| Description: | O centro histórico da cidade do Porto, encontra-se de há alguns anos para cá, a perder população a um ritmo elevado, em resultado de profundas alterações económicas e acima de tudo culturais, da actual sociedade do século XXI. Por outro lado, a inadaptabilidade dos modelos antigos de habitação aos novos modos de vida, bem como às novas exigências contemporâneas de conforto e à sua importância no desenvolvimento do projecto da habitação, levaram ao abandono e consequente degradação de grande parte do edificado corrente portuense, situação que constitui uma preocupação social e global da cidade. Assim, a reabilitação urbana tem sido um tema bastante recorrente na tentativa de manter vivos os centros históricos, que tanto valor têm na identidade das cidades, conferindo-lhes a capacidade de satisfazer as necessidades requeridas pelas habitações actuais. No caso do Porto, a zona do centro histórico preserva um carácter arquitectónico de valor inestimável, conjugando a presença de edifícios notáveis e monumentais com um conjunto expressivo de edificado corrente com uma linguagem coerente e unificadora. A estrutura da cidade antiga, contudo, não é suficiente para responder aos problemas contemporâneos de acessibilidade. As ruas estreitas não permitem a criação de zonas de estacionamento, a largura do lote dificulta na maioria dos casos a obtenção de habitações condizentes com as necessidades familiares actuais e, por outro lado os novos hábitos sociais ou um ritmo de vida cada vez mais acelerado, são aspectos que criam, também, novos requisitos habitacionais. É neste sentido que nasce a vontade e motivação para investigar a casa burguesa portuense do século XIX como habitação capaz de se tornar actual e dinamizadora do desenvolvimento urbano da cidade do Porto. Esta dissertação pretende centrar-se em três tópicos de intervenção e adaptação à habitação contemporânea: Estacionamento, Circulações Verticais e Zonas de Serviço. Consideram-se temas de elevada importância e que se demonstram como constrangimentos na transformação do edificado corrente portuense. Recorreremos a casos de reabilitação do edificado habitacional portuense do século XIX, como forma de tipificar o tipo de intervenções que se têm vindo a fazer. A finalidade desta dissertação passa por sintetizar um conjunto de dados suficientemente abrangentes, capazes de apontar boas práticas na forma de intervir no edificado histórico de forma a prevenir soluções desajustadas, já bem visíveis na cidade. Procuraremos questionar o modo de intervir analisando qual a melhor forma de o fazer, tendo sempre presente, contudo, a especificidade de cada caso. |
