Ruína na arquitectura contemporânea: alguns exemplos

Abstract

This essay presented here aims an approach on the role of Ruin in Contemporary Architecture, focusing mainly on six case study architectural work: three Portuguese cases - The Beires detached house, S. Victor Housing, from Álvaro Siza, and the Pousada de Santa Maria from Eduardo Souto de Moura - and three Spanish cases - Space Barberi in Olot-Girona, the project for the Castle Museum of Nègrepellisse, and the Pedra Tosca Park, all from the RCR architects. With these six study cases, it is pretended to give different roles that the Ruin can have in the contemporary architecture, as well as the different types of approach that one may have towards the ruin, and the different meanings that it may take - its symbolic importance, time, memory, the romantic and picturesque. In these study cases there are mentioned the reasons - personal, artistic, architectural or social, that led to the use, or restoration, conversion, creation or invention of Ruin. Thus, to better understand the important role of Ruin in contemporary architecture, these six case studies are mutually compared between them, as well as to other works and point of views regarding different ideologies towards the role of the Ruin in contemporary architecture. With this work it is intended to give different point of view that one can have regarding the subject of the Ruin in contemporary architecture.
