| Title: | A conversão de espaços de culto |
| Issue Date: | 2009-12-22 |
| Abstract: | The conversion of worship places, proposes itself as a reflection about the places of religious activity in the heart of the contemporary city. With a historic overview anchored in three key moments - appropriation, affirmation and conversion - a critical reading about the evolutionary process of the christian worship place in the western urban space is attempted. With a proposal for the conversion of a worship space, a content summary is attempted, directing the topic towards a specific case by intervening in Cattedrale dell' Assunta, inside the historic heritage site of the island of Ischia, southern Italy, expecting to contribute for the opening of a discussion front for the exploration of the specific potentialities of the south european urban panorama. Through the appropriation of existing structures conceived for other uses, christianity has initiated the construction of its worship space inside the domains of the Roman empire, with a tendency to gradually incorporate some of those structures in its own iconographic and liturgical discourse by operating several transformation in order to bring together form and Eucharistic function. The evolutionary process since the underground occupation, in a time of clandestinity and sporadic pursues, to the conversion of major structures of roman's civil life, matches a parallel progression of Christian religion inside the society and particularly, in the politic and military elites of ancient Rome. It's in an intermediate stage that the heyday of christian religion in the western urban context takes place through its affirmation inside the city's domain. Huge religious sites are built during this period, dominating the whole surroundings and imposing themselves over the existing urban fabric, establishing by this means the church as the city's main reference point. The church is now conditioning severely the settlement's structure, the city turns around the temple, transforming it in the city's icon, a projection of its aspirations and potentialities. The ecclesiastic institution is, at this time, the guiding element of the urban structure, crossing all sectors of society and affirming itself as basic element of all human activity, physical, spiritual and power reference of the pre-modern city, with a decisive role in the construction of european identity. In a last moment the appearing of new powers contribute to a vanishing influence of the church, consequence of the development of new ideological paradigms with repercussion over the political, administrative and social fields. The reorganization of the whole productive and financial fabric leads to the appearing of new institutions that will occupy the central place that once belonged to the church. This social change will have consequences in the city's spatial organization, conforming the urban structures to the demands and expectations of the society that inhabits it. It is in this context that the phenomenon of church conversion takes place, reusing the existing ecclesiastic structures for another activity that will bring back a central function to a central urban location. With a historic reading one tries to build a continuous mapping of the social and architectonic space of the christian worship place in the western city, stopping in our days with the recognition of an ongoing process that can be defined as an adjustment between social reality and built space. |
