Abstract

The gender ideology of the Estado Novo, disseminated in particular by the Mocidade Portuguesa Feminina (MPF) through the education of young girls, remitted women to motherhood, care, home life, presenting feminism as an adversary (Pimentel, 2007). The dynamics of inequality existing in the 21st century, revealed by data from the Observatório das Desigualdades and the European Institute for Gender Equality, can be associated, among other factors, with a paternalistic and conservative vision of the social role of women who are heirs of the Salazar's ideology. It is therefore important to analyze, from a historical perspective, the feminist movement and the gender inequalities in Portugal, the country of the longest dictatorship in Western Europe - a "dictatorship with a very strong gender ideology" (Amâncio, 2021, s/p; free translation).
