Do Espírito do Lugar. Um "Centro" de Interpretação Ambiental na Ota

Abstract

The present dissertation is based on a personal interest in the natural heritage of the region where I live - Alenquer - and the importance of communication and protection of its landscape. To this end, a project was developed in a small town called Ota, which aims to fill the lack of an equipment that can respond to this need. One of the main themes debated was the relationship that Man and Architecture have in confrontation with the place and the landscape in which they are inserted. Therefore, the study of the concept of landscape was deepened, of how it has changed, and has been changed over time. This concept varies according to the discipline that studies it - architecture, landscaping, urbanism, geology, or geography - however, the opinion that the landscape is in constant transformation is transversal to all of them. In this sense, it is necessary to evaluate the positive and/or negative impacts of this evolution, in order to understand what threatens the landscape and what kind of responses can be given. It is necessary to find defence mechanisms for the preservation of the natural and cultural heritage, so that the knowledge continues to be transmitted to the future generations. However, the concept and criteria of heritage have been under changes over time. Currently it has a cultural meaning and can include not only individual objects, but also immaterial ones, including landscapes. It is the combination of these three themes - Architecture, Landscape and Heritage - that gives essence to a place. With the study of these themes, it is intended to better understand what is necessary to apprehend a place. What is inhabiting a place?
