| Abstract: | The present dissertation brings in relation, in the field of architectural project theory, the Boa Nova Tea House-Restaurant (1958-63) and the Marés Swimming pool (1961-67) by Álvaro Siza, through the formulation of two precise problems already announced in the title - abstraction and ornament. Neither the projects nor the problems are likely to be new to the reader. However, the presentation of a comparative reading between the two, starting from these two lenses, seems pertinent to us given Siza's creative process in the early years of his work. We thus start from a series of intuitions that served as a basis for the formulation of these relationships, founded mainly through Siza's self-critiques and the theoretical stances of three authors with whom we feel a close affinity. Carlos Martì Aris, Leon Battista Alberti and Adolf Loos, help us to formulate hypotheses through the rigour of the theoretical concepts in relation to the built work and its timelessly intrinsic problems, such as authorship, programme, nature, matter, form and technique. If, on the one hand, we intend to clarify the notion of ornament, dividing it solely into two types - abstract and figurative ornament - we propose, on the other hand, to broaden the notion of abstraction processes, appealing on their semantic value in philosophy and in the various arts, which correspond to the several interpretative possibilities of the common and transitory creative process between the two projects. The years 1961 and 1963 are thus the central period of this dissertation, corresponding to the main hesitations, admitted by himself, in the continuous practical research that constitutes his work. In that period he was involved in several projects - the swimming pool at Quinta da Conceição (1958-65), the renovation of the Roberto Ivens House (1960-61), the Luís Rocha Ribeiro House (1960-62), the Lordelo Cooperative (1960-63) and the Ferreira da Costa House (1962-65) - and, through them, in the disciplinary tension between the process of abstraction and its compatibility with the idea of ornament. It is against this background that the works of the Boa Nova Tea House and the Marés Swimming Pool, studied in parallel, emerge as beacons of investigation. |
| Description: | A presente dissertação coloca em relação, no campo da teoria de projeto, a Casa de Chá- Restaurante da Boa Nova (1958-63) e a Piscina das Marés (1961-67) de Álvaro Siza, através da formulação de dois problemas concretos já anunciados no título - a abstração e o ornamento. Nem os projetos nem os problemas são provavelmente novidade para o leitor. No entanto, a apresentação de uma leitura comparada entre os dois, partindo daquelas duas lentes, parece-nos pertinente face ao processo criativo de Siza nos primeiros anos de ofício. Partimos, assim, de uma série de intuições que serviram como base para a formulação desta teia de relações, fundamentadas principalmente através das auto-críticas de Siza e dos contributos teóricos de três autores com os quais sentimos uma íntima afinidade. São estes - Carlos Martì Aris, Leon Battista Alberti e Adolf Loos - que nos ajudam a formular hipóteses através do rigor dos conceitos teóricos face à obra construída e aos seus problemas intemporalmente intrínsecos, como a autoria, o programa, a natureza, a matéria, a forma e a técnica. Se, por um lado, pretendemos clarificar a noção de ornamento, dividindo-o unicamente em dois tipos - o ornamento abstrato e figurativo - propomos, por outro lado, ampliar a noção de processos de abstração, recorrendo ao seu valor semântico na filosofia e nas várias artes, que correspondem às diversas possibilidades interpretativas do processo de criação comum e transitório entre as duas obras. Os anos 1961 e 1963 constituem-se, assim, como período central desta dissertação, correspondendo às maiores hesitações, admitidas pelo próprio, na contínua investigação prática que constitui a sua obra. Naquele período, encontra-se envolvido em vários projetos - a Piscina da Quinta da Conceição (1958-65), a remodelação da Casa Roberto Ivens (1960-61), a Casa Luís Rocha Ribeiro (1960-62), a Cooperativa de Lordelo (1960-63) e a Casa Ferreira da Costa (1962-65) - e, através deles, na tensão disciplinar entre o processo de abstração e a sua compatibilidade com a ideia de ornamento. É neste plano de fundo que as obras da Casa de Chá da Boa Nova e a Piscina das Marés, estudadas em paralelo, surgem como faróis da investigação. |
