O Cinema de Animação Português de Autor: Uma Proposta de Estudo e de Valorização

Abstract

Considering the Portuguese cultural, artistic, and cinematographic panorama, the Portuguese auteur animation cinema stands out. This branch has been growing in recent decades, not only in terms of the production of short films, but also in terms of national and international recognition. It is, without shadow of doubt, a multifaceted area, containing countless plastic and communicative possibilities. The present investigation arose with the aim of systematizing the most recent history of Portuguese auteur animation cinema, identifying taxonomies, and producing knowledge about its relationship with the most diverse means of production and distribution. In addition to this, it also sought to define some strategies to increase the recognition of Portuguese auteur animation cinema, mainly among a more general audience. To achieve the outlined objectives, a first cross-check of data was carried out, which, through the selection of titles and authors, allowed not only to verify the importance and pertinence of the discussion on Portuguese auteur animation cinema, but also to identify gaps in the level of updating and centralization of available information on the topic. In this sense, information was collected from primary sources, through semi-structured interviews with several professionals in the field of Portuguese animation cinema. To complete the investigation and assist in the identification of emerging taxonomies, some animated films by Portuguese authors were also examined, focusing the analysis on thematic and plastic issues. The work carried out proves the relevance of Portuguese auteur animation cinema in a cultural and artistic context, while also revealing its diversity in terms of themes, techniques, plasticity, and conception of narrative worlds.
