| Description: | "The (in)sociability of space: the case of the Cité Universitaire de Paris" was the title chosen for this dissertation that questions the common spaces sociability of university residences in the Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris. The case study consists of 44 residences built over 100 years (1925-2025) during three distinct phases. Due to its administrative policy of mixing nationalities, it is possible to review at the architectural scale of the residence the same social and cultural conflicts caused by globalization at the urban scale of European cities. The potential of this dissertation alerts and sensitizes architects of future interventions inside or outside the Cité Universitaire de Paris through the main topics that compose it: the university residence's ways of living evolution and the strategies used over time to qualify sociability to the space. Thus, the main objective of this research focuses on understanding how the design of its living spaces influences the modes of sociability between the residential community and its residents, so that in the future it will be possible to provide interpersonal relationships between them through architecture. The evolution of the residential program throughout the three phases of the Cité was studied through its distribution, devices and uses, relating them to the different collective house's typologies evolution. Of the 44 residences that make up the case study, six key-residences were selected - Fondation Suisse (1933), Collège Neérlandais (1938), Maison de Norvège (1945), Maison du Portugal (1967), Résidence Julie-Victoire Daubié (2018) and Pavillon Habib Bourguiba (2020) - which allowed reflecting conclusions that respond to the objective, through the critical and cohesive discourse of reproduced elements, such as axonometric drawings, plans and sections of each residence that allowed the recognition of their spatial strategies. In addition, surveys were applied to residents to take into account their opinion about the different common spaces of the residence they inhabit. These examples allowed the identification of a common space in each key-residence, where it is possible to observe atmospheric strategies and distribution devices. These are able to manipulate the way that one communicates, break the barriers of intimacy, personal or even social, through their environment designed by the architect; they are able to define the residential community spirit through the separation or agglomeration of people achieved with the public and private program's positioning. When these are confronted with the surveys responses conducted on its residents, it is concluded that they provide sociability or unsociability to the space. When it comes to multicultural conflict, the living spaces show that they are not prepared for the different ways of socializing and living of other cultures. Thus, the campus reconstruction or rehabilitation should be based on interdisciplinary research that leads to an awareness of the needs of humanity with knowledge of its sensory world, always being aware that these characteristics change from culture to culture. The dissertation's argument is challenged when one adds to the ways of living, an innate characteristic of the human being - the habit. |
