Title: Preliminary numerical optimization of the E-Motions wave energy converter

Abstract: This paper summarizes the preliminary outcomes of a recent numerical study towards the improvement of E-Motions. This is a wave energy converter capable of protecting sensitive equipment whilst converting energy from wave/wind induced roll oscillations of multipurpose offshore floating platforms. Firstly, E-Motions is presented and the preceding studies are briefly reviewed. Secondly, the numerical model calibration procedures are provided. Thirdly, the preliminary results on the numerical simulations, with regards to wave-platform-Power Take-Off interactions and power output, are discussed. Upgraded versions of previous E-Motions variants, namely with semi-cylindrical and semi-spherical hull designs, yield higher power ratios and exhibit roll response amplitude operator peaks above 40º/m. The estimated power outputs (average values of up to 30 kW) are further bolstered by improved combinations of Power Take-Off massdamping values, adapted to each of the eight considered sea-states from two sites along the Portuguese coastline Aguçadoura and São Pedro de Moel.
