História do jornalismo radiofónico em Portugal: dos primeiros noticiários aos anos 90

Abstract

This book brings together a collection of essays on the history of radio journalism in Portugal, covering the period between the emergence of the first news programs, in the late 1920s, and the second phase of liberalization of the radio sector that took place at the beginning of the 1990s. The essays demonstrate how journalism took time to become an autonomous field within the radio stations, and it documents the slow development process of the different journalism genres. Two of the chapters focus on the Estado Novo period, which make clear the role played by the State in controlling the news output but also the control of the professionals who could work at the stations. The close relationship between the development of radio news and advertising is also detailed. The chapters that are focused on the 1980s and 1990s demonstrate how radio journalism underwent a paradigm shift after the emergence of projects led by a new generation of professionals who sought to break away from the formal language and structure that had characterized radio news bulletins throughout the dictatorship and in the years that followed the Carnation Revolution. The role played by 'free stations' in contributing to the training of radio journalists is also addressed.
