A guerra como condição de santidade: freires e mártires venerados entre as Ordens Militares (séculos XII-XVI)

Abstract

This paper focus on a double dimension of research. It aims to study the friars of the Military Orders who died in an aura of sanctity, especially those who achieved it through martyrdom, between the 12th and the 16th century. The holy warriors of the Military Orders, which include the beatified, the venerable, and the virtuous, are associated with the war against the infidel, the Crusade, both in the Holy Land and in the Iberian Peninsula, in the context of the Reconquista, and within the war in North Africa. In a second moment, the hagiographic narratives written by friars of the Military Orders will be examined, especially those written along the Middle Ages and the beginning of Modern Ages.
