Abstract

This article seeks to clarify the ways of regulating the work of Portuguese butchers in the Late Middle Ages. It begins by underlining the enormous heterogeneity within the craft, the existence of contradictory interests, and then recalling the various products in whose trade the butchers were involved, with an emphasis on hides. Several laws and postures that regulate the respective work are analyzed.
