Representações Cinematográficas da Periferia de Lisboa

Abstract

In constructing various narratives of the city and its history, cinema emerges as an essential driver. Just like architecture, it can also build, converting ideas and words into a set of images and forms that survive the passage of time. Cinema looks over the city, creating infinite imagery around it. Two spaces then appear from this process: the one represented on the big screen and the one that exists as a physical space in urban reality. This Integrated Master's dissertation in Architecture is a multifaceted account of some of the cinematographic images constructed around the periphery of Lisbon over the years. It is based on the detailed analysis of four works that allow us - thanks to their setting, but also by the way they confront it - to reflect on the urban object of study, from an architectural and urban approach. Starting from a set of works of distinct filmic classification categories (fiction, institutional film, television broadcast and documentary) we seek to establish a connection between the representation and the identity of this marginalized urban space, from its genesis to its (at least seeming) consolidation.
