| Abstract: | This article examines the municipal finances of the town of Elvas in 1432-1433, based on the transcript of its sole surviving medieval account book. The analysis is presented in two sections: revenues and expenses. Our aim is to contribute to the knowledge about the Portuguese municipal finances in the Middle Ages, by identifying the municipality's financial resources, its management and applications, the priorities of the expenses and the strategies used to achieve financial stability |
| Description: | Este artigo analisa as finanças municipais de Elvas em 1432-1433, a partir da leitura e transcrição integral do único livro sobrevivente relativo às receitas e despesas do concelho durante a Idade Média. Na análise das contas, divide-se a abordagem entre receitas e despesas. Com o intuito de contribuir para o conhecimento das finanças municipais portuguesas na Idade Média, conduzimos a investigação de modo a perceber quais eram os meios de financiamento do município, como eram geridos, de que forma os recursos financeiros eram aplicados, quais eram as prioridades dos gastos concelhios e que mecanismos eram utilizados para se alcançar o equilíbrio financeiro. |
