| Abstract: | The interpretation of the monastic space, seen as an urban structure, is based on the study of its origin within the Roman city planning followed by a cross-study of St. Augustine and St. Bernard’s suggestions of the ideal city. These are the foundations of western European monastic spaces. The study also analyses the influence of Monasteries on the growth of nearby villages and towns, examining the specific case studies of the Monastery of Santa Maria da Feira and the Monastery of Vila de Arouca. |
