A Tradição da Espessura. o uso de terra compactada na construção de uma linguagem contemporânea

Abstract

The present Master's degree dissertation seeks attentive consideration on the integration of an ancient constructive technique into contemporary architecture, taking as its place the Quinta de Roriz, vineyard estate located in the Douro valley. Its development is based on the discussion of (re-) valuation of the territory by means of a new architectural device that implements a new dynamic and simultaneously monitors the rhythms and rituals of that estate (Quinta). To understand the adequacy of this constructive technique to the place, we should read the layers of history, which translate and condense their meanings in the matter, act as a means of validating the proposal and bring it closer to the proposed theme. It is given as practice of a theory the intervention in the form of a storage cellar, with tasting and lodging facilities in the Upper Douro region vineyards ambience context. The possibility of this being realized is explored in response to the program, which proposes to bring the visitor who will experience them to the sources of energy and signs of the site closer to the various areas. In essence, it stands to re-establish something similar to justice, in the still duality in force between image and physicality, or in Aristotelian terms, between form and matter. Thus, the work faces a "tradition of thickness'' inherent to man and to the things produced by him, through the exhibition of a trajectory that passes through a metaphysical position and interlinks the inner and outer worlds of the "I, creator''. Alongside a reading of the place as an informant of the project, the paths suggested by the material itself for the construction of contemporary language are developed, while at the same time fortifying a relationship with the circumstance in which it belongs.
