| Abstract: | Assuming hydronymy as a special lexical subset that preserves the most ancient roots found in modern languages, we shall propose that Almorode, a river-name designating a watercourse of Northern Portugal, combines two Indo-European roots for European river names (*alm 'to flow' + *wer 'water') with the Germanic locative suffix *reuth 'flat land'. This proposal contrasts with other current hypotheses positing different etymological origins for this hydronym (namely, its Arabic origin) |
| Description: | Assumindo a hidronímia como um reservatório linguístico muito particular onde se conservam algumas das mais antigas raízes ainda hoje correntes nas línguas modernas, proporemos que Almorode, o hidrónimo que designa um pequeno curso fluvial no Norte de Portugal, combina duas raízes indo-europeias frequentes em nomes de rios europeus (*alm 'fluir' + *wer 'água') com o sufixo locativo germânico *reuth 'terra desbastada'. Esta proposta afasta-se de outras hipóteses correntes que propõem explicações históricas diferentes para o hidrónimo aqui considerado (nomeadamente, dos que o relacionam com uma possível origem árabe). |
