Abstract: Founded in 1540, the Society of Jesus was swiftly integrated in the Portuguese expansionist project of the Early Modern Age. The main interests of this expansionist project were of a socioeconomical, political and religious nature. Therefore, the project sought to expand both Empire and Faith. In 1549, with the approval of king D. João III, the first Jesuits arrived in the New World. Brazil was at that time divided into nine captaincies with territorial depth, and the Portuguese started by settling along the coast. Initially, the Jesuits established themselves in the main settlements - the towns (vilas) - usually with the objective of building a church and a residency. However, they soon realized that the most effective means of converting the Indigenous population was to assemble them in missionary centers - the villages (aldeias). Consequently, the Jesuits began organizing missionary villages in the captaincies, first near the towns and later on along coastal areas still beyond the effective control of the Portuguese crown. From the 1600s onwards, the Society began a second line of occupation, establishing productive centers - sugar and cattle farms ( fazendas) - in areas then considered to be close to the hinterland (sertão). The present research work looks at the main settlements created and administered by the Jesuits in the captaincy of Espírito Santo between 1551 and 1759, focusing on the impact that these settlements had on the occupation, structuring and development of that territory. By studying and mapping the Jesuits' presence, we shall demonstrate how their settlements constituted - both due to their diversity and their network characteristics - a territorial system of significant interest for architectural and landscape history. In analyzing this system, we will highlight its hierarchic organization, relational nature and adaptability, factors that enabled the Society of Jesus to pragmatically accomplish its missionary objectives in the captaincy.
