Origem, identidade e obra - Álvaro Siza e Peter Zumthor

Abstract

The present thesis aims at an approximation and understanding of the role of architect's origins in the process of making architecture. This work starts with the analysis of Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza and Swiss architect Peter Zumthor jouneys, both contemporaries among themselves. Their distinct cultural realities manifest different attitudes and design choices, allowing them to confront the source of their origins and the performance of the "first memory" (from the earliest times of life). Three works by each of the authors stand out: Piscinas das Marés (1958-63), Thermes of Vals (1989-96), Church of Santa Maria (1994-97), Chapel of Sogn Benedetg (1985-87), Terraços of Bragança (1992-04) and Spittelhof (1987-96), are grouped according to their program. The comparison confirm the influence of their origins and in relation to them, the selection made in their answers.
